Manganese steel sheet (often available as plate due to its heavy-duty application) is an alloy known for its exceptional toughness, wear resistance, and self-hardening properties under impact. It's an austenitic, non-magnetic steel used in applications involving high abrasion and heavy impact. Key PropertiesManganese steel typically contains 11-14% manganese and around 1.0-1.4% carbon, which provides its unique characteristics.
  • Work Hardening: The most distinctive feature is its ability to harden significantly under impact or abrasive wear, from an initial hardness of around 200 HB (Brinell Hardness) up to 600 HB or more in service. The inner core remains tough and ductile.
  • Impact Resistance: It offers excellent resistance to severe shock and high impact pressure, safely absorbing heavy blows.
  • Durability: The work-hardening capability means the surface continuously renews its wear resistance throughout its service life, leading to extended durability and reduced maintenance costs.
  • Non-Magnetic: It remains non-magnetic in all conditions, even after extensive work-hardening.
  • Corrosion Resistance: It has good corrosion resistance in many abrasive and corrosive environments.
Common ApplicationsDue to its robust nature, manganese steel plates/sheets are used in industries where heavy impact and high abrasion are common:
  • Mining & Quarrying: Used for crusher liners, jaw plates, hoppers, chutes, and grizzly bars.
  • Construction: Ideal for excavator buckets, bulldozer blades, and other earthmoving equipment components.
  • Railway Industry: Employed in rail tracks, crossing points, and switches, where it withstands continuous heavy traffic.
  • Steel Plants & Foundries: Utilized for shot blasting equipment, wear plates, and other components exposed to severe wear.
Available Products & Suppliers (Mumbai)Manganese steel plates and sheets are available in various grades (e.g., ASTM A128, X120Mn12, MN13) and thicknesses from numerous suppliers in Mumbai.

High manganese steel plate (also available as sheets) is known as Hadfield steel and is an austenitic, non-magnetic alloy prized for its exceptional toughness, wear resistance, and self-hardening properties under impact. It is ideal for applications involving high abrasion and heavy impacts. Key PropertiesManganese steel typically contains 11-14% manganese and around 1.0-1.4% carbon, which provides its unique characteristics.
  • Work Hardening: The most distinctive feature is its ability to harden significantly under impact or abrasive wear. The initial hardness of around 200 HB (Brinell Hardness) can increase to at least 500-600 HB in service while the inner core remains tough and ductile.
  • Impact Resistance: It offers excellent resistance to severe shock and high impact pressure, safely absorbing heavy blows.
  • Durability: The continuous work-hardening capability means the surface constantly renews its wear resistance throughout its service life, leading to extended durability and reduced maintenance costs.
  • Non-Magnetic: The austenitic structure of the steel renders it non-magnetic, making it suitable for specialized applications like bottom plates for lifting magnets.
  • Corrosion Resistance: It performs well in abrasive and corrosive environments.
Common ApplicationsDue to its robust nature, high manganese steel plates/sheets are used in industries where heavy impact and high abrasion are common:
  • Mining & Quarrying: Used for crusher liners, jaw plates, hoppers, chutes, and grizzly bars.
  • Construction & Earthmoving: Ideal for excavator buckets, bulldozer blades, and other earthmoving equipment components.
  • Railway Industry: Employed in rail tracks, crossing points, and switches, where it withstands continuous heavy traffic.
  • Steel Plants & Foundries: Utilized for shot blasting equipment, wear plates, and other components exposed to severe wear.
