Hot die steel bar is a high-performance tool steel product used to create components capable of withstanding high temperatures, intense pressure, and abrasion. These bars are essential for applications like forging, die-casting, and extrusion due to their excellent toughness, hot hardness, and resistance to thermal fatigue. Key Properties & AdvantagesHot die steels, such as the widely popular H13 grade, are alloyed with chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium to enhance their performance characteristics:
  • High Temperature Resistance: They retain their hardness and strength (known as red hardness) during prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures, typically up to 600°C (1112°F) or more.
  • Excellent Toughness: Formulated to resist thermal shock and fatigue cracking (heat checking) caused by repeated heating and cooling cycles.
  • Wear and Abrasion Resistance: The alloy content provides resistance to surface degradation, which extends the tool's service life.
  • Dimensional Stability: These steels exhibit minimal distortion during the heat treatment process, maintaining the precision of manufactured tools.
Common GradesThe most prevalent grades fall under the AISI H-series, with H13 being the most common due to its versatility.
Grade Hardening MethodPrimary Applications
H11 Air-hardening High-speed hammer forging dies, mold manufacturing for automotive and home appliances.
H13 Air-hardening Die casting molds (aluminum, zinc, magnesium), hot forging dies, extrusion dies, and hot shear blades.
H21 Tungsten-based Tools requiring sustained high heat resistance above 600°C, such as piercing punches.

Hot die steel is a category of high-performance tool steel designed to withstand high pressure, heat, and abrasion during metal forming processes at elevated temperatures. It is widely used for manufacturing durable dies and components in industries like forging, die-casting, and extrusion. Key Properties & Advantages
  • High Heat Resistance: Hot die steels retain their hardness and strength at high temperatures, typically up to 600°C (1112°F) for H13. This property is often called "red hardness".
  • Excellent Toughness: They are formulated to resist thermal fatigue cracking (heat checking), impact, and mechanical shock that occurs with repeated heating and cooling cycles.
  • Wear Resistance: The alloy content provides resistance to abrasion, erosion, and surface degradation, which prolongs tool life.
  • Dimensional Stability: These steels exhibit minimal distortion during the heat treatment and operation phases, which ensures precision in the manufactured components.
  • Good Thermal Conductivity: This allows for efficient dissipation of heat generated during manufacturing processes, ensuring uniform heat distribution.
Common GradesHot die steels are part of the AISI H-series and are classified into chromium, tungsten, and molybdenum subgroups. The most popular grade is H13 due to its excellent balance of properties and availability.
Grade Key FeaturePrimary Applications
H11 High toughness, air-hardening capability, less vanadium than H13 High-speed hammer forging dies, mold manufacturing for automotive and appliances.
H13 Excellent thermal fatigue resistance, high hot hardness, and good wear resistance; most versatile. Die casting molds (aluminum, zinc, magnesium), hot forging dies, extrusion dies, plastic injection molds, hot shear blades.
H21 Tungsten-based, ideal for applications requiring higher temper resistance than H13. Tools requiring high heat resistance over 600°C, like piercing punches and hot shear blades.

🔹 Heat Treatment & Processing

1020 can be heat-treated to improve its hardness and machinability:

  1. Annealing: Heat to 870-910°C and allow to cool slowly.

  2. Normalizing: Heat to 870-920°C and air cool to refine grain structure.

  3. Case Hardening (for wear-resistance applications): Carburizing can give a hard surface with a tough core.

  4. Cold Working: Increases strength slightly but decreases ductility.

📌 1020 has limited hardenability due to its low carbon content, so it’s typically not used for high-strength, hardened components.

GRADEEN18 Round Bar

EN18 Round Bar is a medium carbon, nickel-chromium alloy steel known for its high strength, toughness, and wear resistance. It is commonly used in applications where high tensile strength and fatigue resistance are required. EN18 can be heat treated (quenched and tempered) to achieve superior hardness and mechanical properties, making it suitable for gears, shafts, studs, and other high-stress components.

Chemical Composition (Typical)
  • Carbon (C): 0.35 – 0.45%

  • Manganese (Mn): 0.50 – 0.80%

  • Silicon (Si): 0.10 – 0.35%

  • Nickel (Ni): 2.00 – 2.50%

  • Chromium (Cr): 0.50 – 0.80%

  • Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.035%

  • Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.035%

  • Balance: Iron (Fe)

Key Properties
  • High Tensile Strength & Toughness – Ideal for heavy-duty applications.

  • Good Wear Resistance – Suitable for components subjected to friction and impact.

  • Fatigue Resistance – Handles cyclic loads effectively.

  • Heat Treatable – Can be quenched and tempered to achieve desired hardness and strength.

  • Machinability – Can be machined in annealed condition prior to heat treatment.

Applications
  • Automotive Industry: Shafts, gears, studs, and axles.

  • Industrial Machinery: Pins, spindles, and high-strength components.

  • Power Transmission: Shafts, couplings, and rotating machinery parts.

  • General Engineering: Tools, dies, and components requiring high toughness and wear resistance.

Available Forms
  • Hot Rolled Round Bars

  • Forged Bars

  • Bright Bars (peeled, turned, or ground finish)
