A2 tool steel is an air-hardening, medium-alloy, cold-work tool steel that combines excellent wear resistance, good toughness, and dimensional stability. It belongs to the AISI ‘A’ series of tool steels and is one of the most widely used cold-work grades. The steel is heat-treatable and capable of achieving high hardness while maintaining good machinability and impact resistance.
Chemical Composition:
Carbon (C): 0.95 – 1.05%
Chromium (Cr): 4.75 – 5.50%
Molybdenum (Mo): 0.90 – 1.40%
Manganese (Mn): 0.60 – 1.00%
Silicon (Si): 0.20 – 0.50%
Vanadium (V): 0.15 – 0.50%
Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.03%
Sulphur (S): ≤ 0.03%

Density: 7.85 g/cm³
Hardness (Annealed): ~225 HB
Hardness (Hardened & Tempered): 57 – 62 HRC
Tensile Strength: 1600 – 2000 MPa
Yield Strength: ~1300 MPa
Modulus of Elasticity: 210 GPa

A2 round bars are available from 10 mm to 600 mm diameter (customized dimensions available).

Heat Treatment:
Annealing: Heat to 850°C – 870°C and cool slowly in the furnace.
Hardening: Preheat to 800°C – 850°C, then heat to 950°C – 980°C, air quench.
Tempering: Temper immediately after hardening at 200°C – 550°C as required for desired hardness (double tempering recommended).
