The term "Sheet ASTM A513 Cr2" is a combination of two distinct standards that have different applications and material forms.
  • ASTM A513 is the standard specification for electric-resistance-welded (ERW) carbon and alloy steel mechanical tubing, not flat sheets. It is used for applications requiring precise dimensional accuracy and a superior finish, often for automotive parts, furniture, and machinery. This standard has "Types" (e.g., Type 1, Type 2, Type 5 DOM) but does not use "Cr2" as a grade designation.
  • CR2 is a grade designation within the Indian Standard (IS) 513 specification, which covers cold-reduced low carbon steel sheets and strips for bending and drawing purposes. CR2 stands for "Drawing Quality (D)" steel and is specifically meant for flat products.
Therefore, a "Sheet ASTM A513 Cr2" is not a formally recognized product specification. When suppliers use this term, they are likely referring to an IS 513 CR2 (Drawing Quality) steel sheet that they are marketing using a blend of Indian and American terminology to indicate a high-quality, cold-rolled sheet material. Key Characteristics of IS 513 CR2 Sheets
  • Material Form: Sheets and strips (flat products), not tubes.
  • Grade: CR2, or Drawing Quality (D), offering good formability and a high-quality surface finish.
  • Standard: Conforms to IS 513 (Part 1): 2016.
  • Applications: Automotive body panels, home appliances, metal furniture, and general engineering applications requiring complex forming.
  • Equivalent Grades: The equivalent international grades are ASTM A1008 DS, JIS G 3141 SPCD, and EN 10130 DC03.

A CRGO lamination core is an assembled magnetic core made from precisely cut strips of Cold-Rolled Grain-Oriented (CRGO) electrical steel. These cores are essential components in various electrical equipment, particularly transformers, as they provide an efficient path for magnetic flux while minimizing energy losses. Key Features
  • Material: High-grade silicon steel with a highly oriented grain structure to maximize magnetic properties in one direction.
  • Purpose: To guide the magnetic field and significantly reduce core losses (both hysteresis and eddy current losses), thereby enhancing the efficiency and performance of electrical devices.
  • Construction: The core is built by stacking thin, insulated laminations, which helps to further reduce eddy currents.
  • Grades & Thicknesses: Available in various high-performance grades (e.g., M4, M5, M6) and thicknesses (e.g., 0.23 mm, 0.27 mm, 0.30 mm, 0.35 mm) as per standards like IS 3024:2015.
Types of CRGO Lamination CoresManufacturers produce cores in various shapes to suit different applications:
  • E & I Type: The most common type of lamination used in single-phase transformers, chokes, and ballasts, consisting of E-shaped and I-shaped pieces that fit together.
  • U & I Type: Similar to E&I, but using U and I shapes.
  • Stacked Cores: Used primarily in larger power and distribution transformers, where individual strips are stacked to form the core "legs" and "yokes", often utilizing overlap or step-lap joints for improved efficiency.
  • Wound/Toroidal Cores: Made from a single continuous strip wound into a ring shape. These cores offer excellent magnetic performance and a compact design, suitable for voltage regulators and specific types of transformers.
  • C-Cores: Used in certain transformer designs, made by cutting a wound core and opening it up to be assembled around a pre-wound coil.

CRNGO (Cold Rolled Non-Grain Oriented) steel is a type of electrical steel (silicon steel) widely used in rotating electrical machines like motors, generators, and alternators due to its uniform magnetic properties in all directions. It is available in large mother coils which are then processed into narrower slit coils by suppliers to meet specific customer requirements. Key Characteristics
  • Non-Oriented Grains: Unlike CRGO steel (which has aligned grains for directional magnetism), CRNGO has a random or non-oriented grain structure, providing consistent magnetic performance regardless of the direction of magnetic flux flow.
  • Composition: It is an iron-silicon alloy, typically containing 0.5% to 3.5% silicon, which increases electrical resistivity and decreases core losses (hysteresis and eddy currents).
  • Forms:
    • Mother Coils (Wide Coils): The initial, large-width coils produced by mills, often ranging in width from 600 mm to 1300 mm or more, and in various thicknesses (e.g., 0.35 mm, 0.50 mm, 0.65 mm, 1 mm).
    • Slit Coils: Mother coils are processed (slit) into narrower strips, typically from 10 mm to 1000 mm in width, for use in specific applications like creating laminations for motor cores.
  • Condition: Available in fully-processed (optimum magnetic quality, softer for punching) or semi-processed conditions (requires a final annealing by the customer).
  • Standards: Conforms to international and national standards such as IS 3024, ASTM A876, and IEC 60404-8-1.
ApplicationsCRNGO mother and slit coils are primarily used as core materials in:
  • Electric Motors: For home appliances, industrial machinery, and electric vehicles (EVs).
  • Generators and Alternators: Large and small power generation equipment.
  • Small Transformers: For general-purpose electrical devices and ballasts.
  • Inductors and Solenoids: Electronic components that store and release energy.

CRGO lamination strips are precisely cut strips made from Cold-Rolled Grain-Oriented electrical steel. They are the foundational components for creating highly efficient magnetic cores in transformers and other electrical devices, such as chokes and ballasts. The strips are assembled into a core structure to minimize energy loss and maximize magnetic performance in applications where the magnetic field is in a predictable direction. Key characteristics
  • Optimal magnetic properties: CRGO steel has its crystal grains aligned in the rolling direction, giving it excellent magnetic properties for applications like transformers where the flux flows in a specific, predictable path.
  • Minimized energy loss: The laminations are stacked and insulated from each other to minimize energy loss from eddy currents. The grain orientation also minimizes hysteresis loss.
  • High resistivity: The silicon content in the steel increases its electrical resistivity, which also helps to reduce eddy current losses.
  • Available thicknesses: Common thicknesses for CRGO laminations are 0.23 mm, 0.27 mm, and 0.30 mm, with new grades even thinner at 0.18 mm.
  • Standard compliant: As per the Indian government's Quality Control Order, CRGO products must adhere to the Indian Standard (IS) 3024:2015, which specifies requirements for core loss, magnetic flux density, and thickness tolerance.
  • Precision manufacturing: The strips are precisely cut to customer specifications, and suppliers often use automated machinery to ensure low burr formation and accurate dimensions.
ApplicationsCRGO lamination strips are used to make core products for a wide variety of electrical equipment:
  • Transformers: For cores in power and distribution transformers.
  • Voltage regulators and stabilizers: To ensure stable power output.
  • Current transformers: For accurate measurement and protection.
  • Chokes and inductors: For filtering and storing energy.
  • UPS and other power electronics: For efficient power conversion
