Aluminium alloy 7075 sheets are highly-stressed, heat-treatable structural materials known for their exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, which is comparable to that of many steels. It is widely used in applications where high performance is critical, such as in the aerospace and defense industries. The primary alloying element in 7075 is zinc, with smaller amounts of magnesium and copper. However, the corrosion resistance of 7075 is lower compared to some other aluminum alloys. Common tempersThe mechanical properties of 7075 are dependent on the heat treatment (temper) it undergoes. 7075-T6: This is the standard temper for 7075 and is known for its maximum strength. However, it is more susceptible to stress corrosion cracking than the T73 temper. The T6 temper is created by a solution heat treatment and artificial aging process.7075-T73: This temper offers improved resistance to stress corrosion cracking and a better balance of strength and durability by being "overaged" beyond the T6 condition.7075-T651: The "T651" temper for sheets is similar to T6 but includes a stress-relieving process after heat treatment to prevent distortion during machining. Common applicationsThe alloy's combination of high strength and durability makes it ideal for a wide range of demanding applications. Aerospace: Used for highly stressed structural parts of aircraft, such as wing spars, fuselage frames, and fittings.Defense: Components for firearms (like receivers and barrels), missile parts, and military vehicle armor.Automotive and marine: High-performance car parts, bicycle components, and stress-bearing fittings on ships.Tooling: Jigs, fixtures, and other industrial equipment that require high stiffness and precision.Sporting goods: Items like rock climbing equipment and archery gear.

An Aluminium 5005 sheet is a medium-strength alloy containing magnesium as its primary alloying element. It is known for very good corrosion resistance, excellent weldability, and superior characteristics for decorative anodizing, though some surface streaks may occur. The sheets are non-heat-treatable and can be hardened only by cold working. Common tempersThe mechanical properties of 5005 sheets vary depending on the amount of cold work applied, which is denoted by the temper designation. O (Annealed): The softest and most ductile temper, suitable for applications requiring maximum formability.H14 (Work Hardened): A half-hard temper that provides a good balance of strength and formability.H24 (Stabilized and Work Hardened): Provides good corrosion resistance with more strength than the H14 temper.H34 (Stabilized and Work Hardened): A stabilized temper that offers better ductility than H38. ApplicationsThe combination of properties makes 5005 aluminum sheets suitable for a range of uses, particularly those with cosmetic or architectural requirements. Architectural: Building panels, cladding, and facades, where its corrosion resistance and bright anodized finish are valuable.Appliances: Panels and trim for appliances like refrigerators and cooking equipment.Signage: Road signs, nameplates, and other display applications due to good formability and surface finish.Transportation: Interior components for vehicles and some marine applications.Other general fabrication: Suitable for chemical and food equipment, as well as general sheet metal work.

5005 is a non-heat-treatable aluminum alloy primarily alloyed with magnesium, which increases its strength through a process called cold working. "Hard" 5005 sheets are those that have been cold-worked to a higher strength and lower ductility compared to softer tempers. For example, the H18 temper indicates a heavily strain-hardened sheet, and H38 denotes a stabilized, work-hardened sheet. The 5005 alloy is prized for its corrosion resistance, excellent weldability, and ability to produce a bright, decorative anodized finish. Hard temper propertiesThe "hard" tempers of 5005 are achieved through cold rolling, which increases the material's strength but reduces its formability compared to the softer, or "O," tempers.
  • Corrosion resistance: Maintains the same high resistance to atmospheric corrosion as softer tempers. When anodized, it produces a clear, bright film, making it well-suited for decorative and architectural applications.
  • Weldability: Exhibits excellent welding characteristics, and all commercial welding methods can be used. When welding prior to anodizing, using 5356 welding wire can help minimize color variations.
  • Formability: While more rigid than softer tempers, hard temper 5005 sheets can still be formed, especially in stabilized tempers like H34.
  • Machinability: Generally has poor machinability compared to other aluminum alloys. Machinability improves in harder tempers, such as H34 and H38, but is still considered difficult.
Common applicationsThe higher strength and excellent finish of hard temper 5005 sheets make them suitable for applications that require durability, good appearance, and corrosion resistance.
  • Architectural: Exterior building panels, cladding, and corrugated sheets.
  • Signage: Road signs, name plates, and other signage that requires a durable, attractive finish.
  • Appliances: Trim and panels for refrigerators and other household appliances.
  • Decorative trim: Architectural and interior decorative components that benefit from a high-quality anodized finish.
Hard temper optionsThe hardness of a rolled sheet is defined by its temper code, where "H" indicates work-hardened material.
  • H18: Full-hard temper achieved through cold working. Offers maximum strength and hardness but with reduced ductility.
  • H14: Half-hard temper, which provides a good balance of strength and formability.
  • H38: Strain-hardened and then stabilized to improve ductility and internal stress.
  • H34: A stabilized temper that offers better ductility than H38.

Alloy 2024 is an alclad sheet in the T3 temper. It was the first Al-Cu-Mg alloy to have a yield strength approaching 50,000-psi and generally replaced 2017-T4 (Duralumin) as the predominant 2XXX series aircraft alloy. With its relatively good fatigue resistance, especially in thick plate forms, aluminum alloy 2024 continues to be specified for many aerospace structural applications. 2024 varient alloys, such as higher purity 2124 and 2324, with improvements in strength and other specific characteristics, have also found application in critical aircraft structures. An improved sheet alloy for fuselage applications was introduced in 1991. Alclad C188 offers
improved fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth while maintaining the strength characteristics of 2024.

An Aluminium 7075 block is a heat-treatable aluminum alloy primarily known for its exceptional strength and toughness, with a strength-to-weight ratio comparable to that of many steels. The primary alloying element is zinc, with smaller amounts of magnesium and copper. The blocks are commonly used in highly stressed structural applications where high performance is critical, such as in the aerospace, defense, and high-performance automotive industries. Common tempersThe mechanical properties of 7075 blocks are significantly influenced by their temper, which is achieved through specific heat treatments.
  • 7075-T6: This is the most common temper for 7075 and is known for its maximum strength and hardness. However, it is more susceptible to stress corrosion cracking than the T73 temper.
  • 7075-T651: This temper is similar to T6 but includes a stress-relieving process after heat treatment. This helps prevent distortion during machining, making it ideal for blocks that will be machined into final components.
  • 7075-T73: This temper is "overaged" beyond the T6 condition to offer improved resistance to stress corrosion cracking. While slightly weaker than T6, it is more ductile and durable in high-stress environments.
  • 7075-T7351: Like T73, this temper offers enhanced resistance to stress corrosion cracking, and the "-51" designation indicates it has also been stress-relieved for machining.
Key characteristics
Characteristic Description
High Strength-to-Weight Ratio 7075 has one of the highest strength-to-weight ratios among all aluminum alloys, making it ideal for lightweight, high-performance applications.
Machinability Machinability is considered good, especially in the T6 temper, where it can be precisely cut and shaped.
